Project: Kitchen
Remodel
Location: Union City, CA
Problem:
The old Kitchen was dark and lacked adequate storage space and a place
to eat. The owner is shorter with some limited motion caused by back problems,
so an ergonomic solution. The home, built in the early 1960’s also
featured a “cathedral” ceiling with the low part at only 6’-10”
off the floor.
Solution:
The solution involved adding appropriate storage. We added an island which
is fitted out with both pull out pantries and pan drawers in addition
to the 6 burner gas cook top. We dropped the counter height to 34 inches,
and recessed the gas cook top so the grilles covering the gas rings are
flush with the counter. This helps for a shorter cook. The island also
features a breakfast bar.
We also pulled all the over counter cabinets to the two side walls because
of the low ceiling. This keeps the ceiling from feeling two low, and helps
the Kitchen feel lighter.
We used soap stone for the counters around the edge of the Kitchen and
Quartz composite material for the island counters. The cabinets are Maple
around the edges of the room. The island cabinets are clad in stainless
Steel. Floors are bamboo. |
